Arc Overview
The Chimera Ant arc begins when a Chimera Ant Queen — capable of incorporating genetic material from consumed prey — begins eating humans in the NGL (Neo-Green Life), a nation that bans all technology. The ants she produces inherit human intelligence, Nen capability, and physical power far beyond normal human limits.
The Hunter Association dispatches an operation team: senior Hunters Netero, Morel, and Knov, supported by Gon, Killua, and others. The operation culminates in a palace invasion — each team taking a separate target while Netero engages the King directly.
Meruem himself is the arc's most complex figure: born to dominate and destroy, he develops an unexpected connection with Komugi — a blind human shogi champion — that humanizes him in ways combat never could. His death, alongside Komugi, is the arc's emotional center.

The arc that breaks its own rules
Everything the series spent four arcs establishing gets tested here, and most of it fails. Netero throws the fastest strikes in the story at Meruem and they are not enough; he wins with the Poor Man's Rose, a bomb planted in his chest before the fight started, which is not Nen at all. Knuckle beats Youpi without ever being stronger than him, by converting damage into a debt until the King's Guard is bankrupt. The pattern is consistent: power is not what decides anything.
Meruem himself is classified as a Specialist for the usual reason — nothing else fits. He absorbs the abilities of the Nen users he consumes, and his output as a newborn already exceeds that of experienced Hunters. The series spends a long time establishing that no fight with him is winnable, which is exactly why it does not resolve him with one.
Komugi, and what Gon gives away
The most important thing Meruem does in this arc is lose at a board game, repeatedly, to a blind girl with no power of any kind. What that does to him is the actual plot: he starts asking for names, including his own, and by the time the poison takes effect he is no longer the thing the Hunter Association set out to kill.
Gon goes the other way. Standing over Kite's body he offers his entire future as a Nen user in exchange for enough strength right now, the vow is accepted, and he destroys Neferpitou without difficulty. Then the bill arrives: a ruined body, a coma, and no aura at all. Nothing in the narrative gives back what he traded.
Read together, the two arcs of the arc are the same argument from opposite ends. The monster becomes a person by losing; the boy stops being one by winning. It is why this arc has the reputation it does.
