Each entry shows what Water Divination does for that category, where it sits on the Nen chart, and how it actually plays out in the series.
Water Divination: The water in the glass increases in volume.
Nen chart: Between Transmutation and Emission
Enhancers pour aura straight back into what they already are. No conversion, no detour: the body gets harder, faster and more durable, and the same aura that strikes also heals. The manga describes them as simple and determined, which is why Gon Freecss and Isaac Netero both land here — they commit to a decision and refuse to walk it back. Enhancement is the easiest category to train and the hardest to make surprising, so an Enhancer tends to win by outlasting an opponent rather than outsmarting them.
Water Divination: The taste of the water changes.
Nen chart: Between Enhancement and Conjuration
Transmuters change the properties of their aura so it behaves like something else — electricity for Killua Zoldyck, elastic gum for Hisoka. The aura is not literally becoming that substance; it imitates its behaviour, which is why a Transmuter has to understand the thing they are copying. Togashi calls them whimsical and prone to lying, and the category rewards exactly that: feints, misdirection, and abilities whose real rule is never the one the opponent assumes.
Water Divination: An impurity appears in the water.
Nen chart: Between Transmutation and Specialization
Conjurers materialise a physical object out of aura — a sword, a chain, a prison. The object is solid enough to touch and stays under the conjurer's control, which makes this the most rule-heavy category of the six: the tighter the conditions a conjurer binds themselves with, the stronger the result. Kurapika's chains are the canonical example, and his Emperor Time vow — lethal if he uses Judgment Chain on anyone outside the Phantom Troupe — is the clearest demonstration of how restriction buys power in Nen.
Water Divination: The colour of the water changes.
Nen chart: Between Enhancement and Manipulation
Emission is about separating aura from the body without losing it. Aura decays quickly once detached, so an Emitter's real skill is keeping projected aura stable and precise at range. The category suits impatient, short-tempered people, and it pairs naturally with Manipulation, since a remote-controlled projectile needs both. Pure Emitters are rare in the series precisely because raw range without a second property is easy to read and easy to dodge.
Water Divination: The leaf floating on the water moves.
Nen chart: Between Emission and Specialization
Manipulators impose their will on living or non-living things, and the cost is always the same: a condition the target has to meet first. Illumi's needles have to be physically inserted; Shalnark's antenna has to be planted. That setup requirement makes Manipulation the most strategic category, and it is why manipulators are described as logical and argumentative. A manipulator who cannot engineer the setup is simply out of the fight.
Water Divination: Anything else happens, or nothing on this list does.
Nen chart: Between Conjuration and Manipulation
Specialization is the category for everything that does not fit the other five. Chrollo Lucilfer steals abilities, Neon Nostrade writes prophecies, Kurapika becomes a Specialist only while his eyes are scarlet. Some people are born into it, some shift into it later in life. Because the category has no shared mechanism, no two Specialists train the same way, and a Specialist result on any test says your answers were unusual — not that you are automatically the strongest.
