Every Hunter x Hunter arc, in order

The four above are the ones with full guides here. For orientation, this is the complete running order of the series, because the arcs that get skipped in summaries are often the ones that explain the rules.

  1. Hunter Exam — the cast assembles and the world is established. Nen is not explained yet, and that is deliberate.
  2. Zoldyck Family — short, and the first real look at what Killua came from.
  3. Heavens Arena — where Nen is actually taught. Wing explains Ten, Zetsu, Ren and Hatsu, and Gon takes Water Divination.
  4. Yorknew City — the Phantom Troupe, and the arc that proves restriction beats raw power.
  5. Greed Island — Biscuit trains Gon and Killua properly; Jajanken is built here.
  6. Chimera Ant — the longest arc, and the one that tests every rule the series has set up.
  7. 13th Hunter Chairman Election — the aftermath, and the resolution of what Gon traded away.
  8. Dark Continent Expedition / Succession Contest — the ongoing arc, largely political, with Kurapika working around the limits of his own vow.

Nothing here is skippable if you care about the Nen system, but Heavens Arena is the one most people underrate: almost every mechanic the later fights depend on is introduced in it.

Where the Nen system gets explained

Hunter x Hunter teaches its own rules in stages, and each arc adds one layer. Heavens Arena gives you the four major principles. Yorknew shows what restriction and pledge buys, through Kurapika's chains. Greed Island covers the advanced techniques — Ko, Ryu, En — and the idea that a Hatsu should match the user's own category. The Chimera Ant arc then spends three hundred chapters breaking the assumption that any of it guarantees a win.

If you want the mechanics in one place rather than arc by arc, the Nen techniques guide collects them, and the affinity chart covers the hexagon.

Frequently asked questions

How many arcs does Hunter x Hunter have?

Eight, counting the ongoing one: Hunter Exam, Zoldyck Family, Heavens Arena, Yorknew City, Greed Island, Chimera Ant, the 13th Hunter Chairman Election, and the Dark Continent Expedition with the Succession Contest inside it. The Chimera Ant arc is by far the longest.

Which arc introduces Nen?

Heavens Arena. Wing teaches Gon and Killua the four major principles -- Ten, Zetsu, Ren and Hatsu -- and Gon takes Water Divination to find his category. The Hunter Exam arc comes first and deliberately withholds the system.

What is the best Hunter x Hunter arc?

Chimera Ant is the usual answer and the one with the strongest reputation, mostly for how it resolves Meruem and what it does to Gon. Yorknew City is the common second choice, and it is the arc that best demonstrates how restriction and pledge works.

Can you skip any arcs?

Not really, if you care about the Nen system. Heavens Arena is the most commonly underrated and the least skippable, because nearly every mechanic the later fights depend on is introduced there.
