Hunter Exam Arc — Hunter x Hunter
The arc that starts it all: Gon Freecss leaves Whale Island to take the Hunter Exam, meets Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio, and crosses paths with Hisoka for the first time.
Arc Overview
The Hunter Exam is a multi-phase elimination test run by the Hunter Association annually. Thousands apply; only a handful pass. The arc covers the full exam sequence — the marathon through Swindlers' Swamp, the underground tunnel gauntlet, the cooking challenge, the Trick Tower floors, the Zevil Island hunt, and the final individual combat phase.
The arc's function is character establishment: every major personality is defined through how they handle the exam's challenges. Gon passes on instinct and empathy. Killua passes on raw assassination skill — then disqualifies himself by killing a combatant, manipulated by Illumi. Kurapika passes through calculation and controlled anger. Leorio passes through stubbornness and genuine compassion.
Key Characters
- Gon Freecss — The protagonist. Passes through instinct, raw physical ability, and the ability to read people accurately under pressure.
- Killua Zoldyck — Assassin heir. Breezes through most phases, is disqualified in the final round by Illumi's needle manipulation.
- Kurapika — Last Kurta survivor. Calm and analytical, with suppressed rage toward the Phantom Troupe driving everything.
- Leorio Paradinight — Aspiring doctor. Loud and impulsive, but his motivation is one of the most genuinely selfless in the series.
- Hisoka Morow — Unstable and dangerous. Attends the exam as a hunting ground and marks Gon as prey worth cultivating.
- Illumi Zoldyck — Disguised as Gittarackur. Prevents Killua from passing the exam by triggering the needle he implanted in his brother's head.
Nen in the Hunter Exam Arc
Nen is not yet named or systematically explained in this arc — it operates as an unnamed force. Hisoka's Bungee Gum appears briefly. Illumi's needle-based Manipulation is active throughout but not explained. The exam's difficulty itself is calibrated around what a Nen user can endure, even before the characters know what Nen is.
The formal introduction to Nen techniques — Ten, Zetsu, Ren, Hatsu — happens in the Heavens Arena arc immediately following. The Hunter Exam establishes what these characters can do physically before Nen gives them a framework for understanding it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens in the Hunter Exam arc of Hunter x Hunter?
The Hunter Exam arc follows Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio as they attempt to pass the annual Hunter Exam — a brutal multi-phase test that filters for the most capable individuals in the world. Does Gon use Nen in the Hunter Exam arc?
No — Nen is not yet part of Gon's or most characters' repertoire during the Hunter Exam. The arc runs almost entirely on physical ability, strategy, and willpower. He has a specific interest in Gon from early on, recognizing raw potential he wants to see mature before fighting. He also passes the exam easily when he chooses to, demonstrating that his presence is purely about entertainment and hunting prey.
